Tips And Tricks For Preventing Back Pain

The American Chiropractic Association states that 80% of the population will have back pain at some point in their lives. They say back pain is the leading cause of disability and a top reason for employees missing work. If you have chronic back pain, you should see a doctor. Here are some tips for preventing back pain before it gets serious.

A Firm Mattress

Pillow top mattresses may look comfortable, but a firm mattress is a lot better for your back. Find a comfortable sleeping position, using pillows between your knees if necessary. You will sleep better, and you will wake up free of back pain.

Yoga

Exercise that promotes stretching and strengthening muscles is good for your back and can help you carry yourself in a way that doesn't do harm to your core. Strong abs are also useful in keeping back pain at bay.

Yoga also calms your body and lowers stress, which in turn relieves tension on your muscles and your back.

Supplements

Many people have found that they can reduce and prevent back pain through the use of supplements. Talk to your doctor about adding glucosamine, flaxseed oil and magnesium to get benefits for your back.

Don't Lift the Heavy Stuff

There is no reason to pretend to be a superhero when it comes to moving heavy objects or items. If an item is difficult to lift, find another way to get it where it needs to go. Using a hand truck or making several trips may be inconvenient, but it is better than causing a back injury that could stick around for the rest of your life.

Heat

Heat can be restful and relaxing to your back and can prevent pain that is caused by tense muscles. Use a heating pad at night or soak in a hot tub. Have heating elements added to your car seat.

Posture

Your mother had a point when she told you to stand up straight. You can save your back by watching your posture. When you are standing, tuck your stomach in and hold your shoulders back. Keep your core engaged as much as you can.

When you are seated, make sure you are not collapsing into your core. That puts a lot of pressure on your back, and it can lead to pain.

Back pain is a part of life, but you can do a lot to reduce and ease the pain you feel in your back. Stay active, be smart and try these tips for a healthier back.
